Meet Manu Toigo
A female survival expert who appeared on the Season One Finale of Discovery Channel's "Naked & Afraid" survived Hemorrhagic Dengue Fever -- and nearly died -- after contracting the virus in the Panama jungle as reported by TMZ.
The then, 45-year-old Manu Toigo was bitten by a mosquito during her journey Panama jungle, while filming her episode (which has aired many times on the Discovery Channel).
While in the jungle, Manu experienced severe headaches and loss of appetite but didn't think twice about the bug bite ... until she arrived back in L.A. Two days later her symptoms grew worse and she soon became too weak to stand up, forcing her to seek help in the emergency room. The headache progressed to a fever, nosebleeds and gum bleeding. Initially, doctors diagnosed Manu as anemic and having severe muscle atrophy. Her symptoms got worse still -- and she was forced to go back to the hospital, where they finally diagnosed her with dengue hemorrhagic fever ... the worst form of dengue fever.
Dengue fever becomes "hemorrhagic" when the virus damages blood vessels to the point they hemorrhage internally. And the worst part -- there's no cure.
Manu says she got to the hospital just in time, and doctors kept a close eye on her -- pumping her with fluids and plasma -- she was able to make a decent recovery. Manu spent a total of 2 weeks in the hospital, months of physical therapy and will always deal with agonizing pain all over her body.
If you're wondering if she regrets going on the show ... Manu says, "Hell no ... that was the most life changing experience that showed me the incredible inner strength I possess."
Manu can be found on IMDb and is working on her next big adventure!
